Wiki Explore places Wikipedia articles on an antique-style map, allowing you to discover the history around you. Each point on the map represents a Wikipedia article about that location, helping you explore historical events, landmarks, and stories from anywhere in the world.
The map uses Mapbox for its base layer, with a custom design inspired by historical cartography. When you click a location, you'll see photos and excerpts from the relevant Wikipedia articles. For areas with multiple points of interest, we use clustering to keep the map readable and a dropdown menu to browse all articles in that location.
We created Wiki Explore to make learning about local history more intuitive and engaging. Instead of searching through text-based lists, you can simply explore the map to discover what happened around you.
Wiki Explore is built with Mapbox GL JS and pulls data directly from Wikipedia's API. The project is open source, and you can find our code on GitHub.
